Living and working in Chinatown / the Downtown Eastside, it's hard to ignore the amount of people in need.
When the Chinatown BIA approached us and and asked if we'd like to participate in a Knit Drive for local residents through the Providence in the Park outreach event, we were so excited. This project is a fantastic opportunity to give back in some small way to the amazing and diverse community where our studio is based.
(For those of you outside of Vancouver who may not know about the Chinatown / Downtown Eastside area, please check out the amazing blog written by an empathetic Beat Cop, Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department.)
Why Providence in the Park, you may ask?
Twice a year, Providence Health Care employees and volunteers distribute gently used men’s and women’s clothing (donated by staff and local businesses), provide 300 healthy lunches (which is donated by the Hospital’s Catering Department) and hand out personal care kits for the Downtown Eastside Community. At each outreach events between 250 and 300 people benefit. The next outreach event is Saturday, October 3rd at Oppenhiemer Park (400 Powell Street).
In addition, we will donate 10% of our sales at the TD Vancouver Chinatown Festival to the Providence in the Park event.
The Knit Drive will kickoff at our booth at the Chinatown Festival August 8-9. If you're local to us, we'd love for you to come down for a bit to sit and knit. We will have a designated knitting area at our booth. The Knit Drive will run until September 28.
We are looking for hats, mittens, scarves and cowls made of Superwash yarn. Your choice of pattern.
Hope to see some of you this weekend!
